Nielsen, Kay. EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON.
London: Hodder and Stoughton. There would be little dispute to the claim that this book holds one of the highest positions on the pinnacle of modern book illustration. The combination of binding, illustration and text found in Kay Nielsen's masterwork has met few challenges for the crown since its publication in 1914. A large quarto bound in dark blue cloth with commanding Art Nouveau cover and spine designs and titles in gilt. The book has 206 magnificently printed pages with 25 mounted color plates by Nielsen, each with captioned tissue guard. Supporting the full page plates are many black and white textual vignettes and decorative borders setting off the handsome wide margins. The pictorial endleaves are strikingly printed in midnight black embellished with gilt. This copy has the following minor faults: A small brown stain on the bottom of pp. 92-93, a smudge on the mounting and plate on p. 112. The binding is worn at the tips of the corners and there are a few faint spots on the front cover. Still remaining a satisfying copy of of one of the most important books of the twentieth century.
