Sandburg, Carl Autograph Manuscript draft of a Preface to unidentified autobiographicalpiece on his beginnings and development as a historian; along with anAutograph Manuscript draft of a piece on Lincoln's early biographer LordCharnwood
n.p., n.d Written in the first person plural, Sandburg's manuscripts begins [in full English sentences]: "During the 1920s when LL [?] & I were doing our stint on Chicago newspapers, we began our first experiments at writing history. We had not been trained so that either of us could say he had capacity or ability to be a professional historian ... we were acquainted with books written in a dull & clumsy style ... we knew other books where men of shallow wisdom & showman's tricks would subvert & falsify so as to fool young people regarding events ... We agreed that no history can be better than the writer of it, the faults & m,erits of an author stand forth & can not be hidden ...In view of these resolutions in the 1920s L.L worked on _____ (?) while I workd on Abraham Lincoln: the Prairie Years ... Each of us changed to a somewhat different method as register later in L.L.'s ___ (?) & my 'Abraham Lincoln: the War Years ... " The second piece begins: "It was [nearly?] 20 years ago I asked 22 college professors of history, quote: 'Which is the best biography of Lincoln? Which biography would you advise me to read?' & many of these 22 professors told me the biography to read was Charnwood's - it was the latest & the best ..." Oblong 8vo. In all, 10 columns in pencil on four sheets of unruled paper (one yellow), written in Sandburg's abbreviated "shorthand"; with hand- written title-page (or divisional page) for "Wise and Pleasant Fools".
