Volumes 7, 10, 11 and 12 each have two pages of manuscript; a total of twenty full pages of corrected manuscript. Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920) wrote her first novel, "Miss bretherton", in 1884, and became a fairly popular writer of her era. She embodied in her most famous novel, "Robert Elsmere", her view that Christianity should be revitalized by stressing its social mission and dismissing the miraculous elements. Mrs. Ward was involved with many charitable and philanthropic efforts, and opposed the extension of suffrage to women, hence her slight today Autograph Edition, No. 20 of 750 copies signed by the author on the half title of Volume One, "Mary A.
