Byrne, Donn Autograph Manuscript Signed ("Donn Byrne") of his essay:[IRELAND], THEROCK WHENCE I WAS HEWN
St. Brieuc, Bretagne, august 1, 1926 Eventually published posthumously by Sampson Low Marston in 1929, as IRELAND, THE ROCK WHENCE I WAS HEWN (the manuscript itself does not include "Ireland" in the title) it is one of the most important and personal works by the Irish-American Byrne, who died tragically in 1928, only two years after he wrote this manuscript, and never saw its publication. Byrne, although born in Brooklyn of Irish parents, grew up in Ireland and identified himself strongly with his mother country, even though he eventually settled in New York where finally made his fame and fortune. An important literary testament from an important figure in the American literary renaisssance Folio (15-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches). 32pp., in green ink on rectos only of 32 ruled sheets, signed and dated at end. With pencil corrections by Byrne or by an editor. The sheets are folded in half, and wrapped in stiff gray wrappers, labeled in pencil: "The Rock whence I was Hewn"; a few sheets are a littled ragged at edges. in a custom red cloth chemise and folding box with leather cover and spine label
