London: Published by G. Herbert, 88, Cheapside, 1825 Fascinating account "written solely for the perusal of the author's friends in England", according to the author, with observations on the geography and climate of the city, the port, the theatre, the beach, etc.; an entire section is devoted to Foreign Residents (mostly English), including North Americans, "Irish Yankees", Frenchmen, Portuguese, etc.; a chapter on customs and manners; dress; sports and amusements; religion; police, army, government; etc., etc. Little is known of the author, but in this copy, an early owner has penned the following note on the recto of the second leaf, beneath the author's own Note: "By Thomas George Love / Founder & Editor of the British Packet" ... ["The British Packet & Argentine News" was a weekly newspaper printed in Argentina for the English-speaking commnity; the first number appeared in aug. 1826]. And a note beneath in pnecil adds "Died in ____ (?) about the year 1845." An interesting copy of this fascinating glimpse of the country through the eyes of a British ex-patriate resident, and quite scarce (OCLC finds 7 locations; only 4 copies have appeared at auction in the last 30 years) (ARGENTINA) First edition. 8vo. [2], viii, [1]-176 pp. Bound in later full paneled calf. Title-page [A1] and conjugate [A4[ reinforced at inner margin; second leaf [A2, cancel (?)] tipped in. With some very interesting marginal notes in pencil and pen throughout (many have been erased) by an English resident familiar with Buenos Aires of the period. Sabin 9014
