In May, 1938, on the eve of Sigmund Freud's departure from Nazi Austria, the young amateur photographer Edmund Engelman carefully photographed the Freud residence, room by room , providing a compete record of the home/ office where Freud had lived and worked for 40 years. Engelman's precious photos managed to capture the rich texture of Freud's intellectual life in the books, the primitive art, the memorabilia, and the photographs which filled Freud's consulting room and apartments. The current photograph, reproduced on Plate 27 of the NY edition, is a haunting image of the desk where Freud wrote the great body of his work. Engelman describes Freud's desk thus: "Wreathed in tobacco smoke, Freud would write long hours into the morning. On his desk the day this picture was taken was a manuscript now believed o be his MOSES AND MONOTHEISM. The ancient figures, in ceremonial poses, stood directly before him as he worked ..." (FREUD, SIGMUND) Printed later by Modern Age. Published in Engelman's Sigmund Freud - Berggasse 19, Vienna. 11 x 14 inches. Gelatin silver print, signed by the photographer Engelman in lower right margin. Fine
