Browne, Hablot K. ("Phiz") "Where can my nieces be? "
n.p., ca. 1860 Hablot K. Browne, "Phiz" (1815-1882) was an illustrator, painter, sporting artist and cartoonist. His career began in 1836 with his illustrations to Dickens's Sunday Under Three Heads, which led to his being selected to illustrate Pickwick Papers, and to a collaboration with Dickens lasting 28 years and involving 13 books. He was a prolific contributor to Punch, and other periodicals, where his cartoons and comic touch elicited enormous popularity. This is a particularly fresh and bright example of his work, probably done toward the end of his cartooning career (13 x 9-1/2 inches). Original watercolour and pencil, signed "Phiz" and inscribed as title. Fine condition. Bryant and Heneage, p. 35
