THE JUVENILE PLUTARCH Comtaining [sic] Accounts of the Lives of Children, and of the Infancy of Illustrious Men, who have been remarkable for their Early Progress in Knowledge.
London R. Phillips 1801 Octavo. 212pp. First edition. Like the classical original, this collection of lives is a series of paeans to remarkable individuals. Childhood geniuses like Pascal and the Admirable Crichton, some cut off in the flower of youth, learn twenty languages, invent mathematical and scientific precepts, and cleave to exemplary virtue. Volney Becker dies rescuing his father from a shark, and the only girl, Frances Maria, dies defending her baby brother from wolves. Four fine copperplate engravings show these prodigies confounding their elders. Rear hinge expertly repaired, front outer hinge slightly cracked, else fine in the original tree-calf with gilt spine and label. (Osborne I,168).
