Tyndall (1820-1893), professor of natural philosophy at Cambridge, had a long career as a scientific experimenter, author, and lecturer; his "investigations of the transparency and opacity of gases and vapours for radiant heat, which occupied him during many years (1859- 1871), are frequently considered his chief work" (Encyclopedia Britannica).
