An eye-witness account of America’s last great Pacific plunderer described Hayes (1828-78) as having “...a charming manner, dressed in the perfection of taste and [able to] cut a confiding friend’s throat or scuttle his ship with a grace which, in the Pacific, was unequalled.” He was a notorious ‘Black-birder’, gun-runner (to the Maoris), murderer and thief, eventually murdered by his ship’s cook and thrown to the sharks. Much legend surrounds his life and exploits but Lubbock professed to having consulted the works of Louis Becke, novelist and adventurer who sailed as supercargo with Hayes, contemporary accounts of him by R.L.
