Peckham (1839-1918), and his role as a chemist in the nascent California petroleum industry. Hired as a refiner in 1865 by the California Petroleum Company, Peckham came west to Ojai and the Santa Clara Valley in order to investigate the commercial potential of California petroleum at a time when the entire state was overrun with oil speculators. His correspondence and accompanying reminiscence reveal him to be a keen observer of both the physical and social environment. A very good copy in the original plain paper dust jacket.
